Alex de la Pena joined the Brown swimming & diving program as an assistant coach in August 2013. De la Pena comes to Brown following a two-year stint as the Head Swimming & Diving Coach and Director of Aquatic Sports at Monmouth College in Monmouth, Illinois.
At Monmouth, de la Pena created and planned water workouts as well as weight room and dryland programs. Additionally, he was responsible for recruiting, fundraising, budget, team travel and monitoring academic performance. In the pool, de la Pena coached 23 All-Midwest Conference performances, along with one conference champion, 19 school records and 88 top ten times in program history. Most recently, he led the men’s and women’s team to a third-place finish at the 2013 Midwest Conference Championship, marking the highest combined finish in team history.
Before Monmouth, de la Pena served as the assistant swimming & diving coach at Oberlin College, where he coached the team to 11 school records and posted 81 top ten times in school history. Under de la Pena’s direction, three swimmers achieved NCAA “B” cut times and one swimmer qualified for the 2010 NCAA Division III National Meet.
Prior to Oberlin, de la Pena was the assistant swim coach at Elyria Catholic High School and previously served as the assistant swim coach at St. Lawrence University.
A 2007 graduate of Baldwin-Wallace College, de la Pena earned a Master of Education in Education Administration and Leadership from St. Lawrence in 2009.
