Position: Assistant Coach

JB Cholnoky joined the Brown men’s crew as an assistant coach of the varsity team in November of 2013. Cholnoky has worked as a volunteer coach for the Brown lower varsity boats and walk-on freshmen since August.

“I've been impressed by John (JB) Cholnoky who has been our volunteer coach this fall,” said head coach Paul Cooke. “He has brought great enthusiasm, loyalty and a strong work ethic to our team. I am excited to have JB now join our staff as an assistant coach. I know he will help us build a strong team for the future.”

While pursuing a major in American History at Dartmouth College, Cholnoky was a four-year member of the Men’s Varsity Heavyweight team, spending three of those seasons coxing the first varsity eight.  He won the Richard Grossman award for leadership as a senior in 2008. Cholnoky went on to race competitively with the Palm Beach Rowing Association after college, winning the San Diego Crew Classic twice and taking silver at the Head of the Charles in 2009, 2010, and 2011.

Cholnoky began his coaching career in 2008 at Choate Rosemary Hall in Wallingford, Conn., where his junior varsity boats went undefeated for three years.  During that time he helped produce a varsity boat that captured bronze at the Youth National Championship in the Men’s Four in 2009, silver in 2010, and a New England Championship in 2011.

He currently resides in Providence, R.I. and is completing a Master’s in American History at Brown University.
